| (Department of Physical Education,SUN Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510275,China) Abstract: By employing relevant theories in new institutional economics, the author analyzed institutional reform of competitive sports in China, and drew the following conclusions: Institutional reform of competitive sports in China is essentially a sort of institutional transition; the main body of institutional transition is various interest groups; the driving force of institutional transition comes from the gaming between various interest groups; in order to realize institutional innovation of competitive sports, we should overcome “path-dependency”, and should com-bine inductive institutional transition with compulsive institutional transition to boost institutional transition.
